Western philosophy has been around since before the time of Jesus. Few philosophers have had as much influence on the world as Plato in western philosophy. Born over 400 years before Jesus, Plato’s influence may be second only to Christianity in this day and age (outside of eastern philosophy). One of Plato’s greatest works, and considered by many his masterpiece, is The Republic, which is widely read today and covers many topics. In The Republic, Plato presents many interesting ideas and thoughts that look to expand one’s wisdom and knowledge of the world. Plato uses a unique style of writing and welcomes controversy and opposing opinions. Some of the main concepts covered are justice, both on an individual and societal level, what is the nature of a man’s soul, the order and character of a just city-state, the forms of government, and theories of universals such as the Forms, and virtue. However, this book is mainly thought of as a philosophical treatise on politics. The main character in the Republic is Socrates, while other characters like Cephalus, Polemarchus, Thrasymachus, Glaucon, and Adeimantus help Socrates navigate through the problems presented by conventional wisdom, while displaying Plato’s thoughts and wisdom. Each of these characters play a key role in setting up Plato’s ideas and thoughts, while bringing to the story their own perspective and intellect. While Plato was an understudy of Socrates, and became the philosopher he is because of Socrates, Plato uses Socrates as a fictional character in his writing and expels his knowledge mainly through him and the conversations he has with the other characters. Plato is a very interesting philosopher, beyond the wisdom he has passed on to others; he writes in a unique ... ...nd forms previously mentioned. Plato presents that particulars participate in forms and give their common quality, which the quality is a reflection of his idea. Plato finally concludes with an argument for the immorality of the soul. The soul’s illness is ultimately injustice. A man can ultimately overcome injustice by harmonizing reason, spirit, and appetite (desire), which will lead to a healthy life and soul.4 Although Plato uses circular reasoning in many of his arguments, he embraces resistance and argument towards his ideas and philosophy. Plato embraces this because this is what dialectic is, refuting one’s views to progress towards a true knowledge. Dialectic is held very dearly to Plato and this is how Plato became so knowledgeable and wise. Plato is one of the greatest philosophers of all time, and The Republic is a prominent figure in today’s society.

Aspects of Human Nature in “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad Essay

Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness encompasses many themes and concepts dealing with the very nature of humanity and its complexity. This novel is set up in two different locations, the Thames River and the Congo River. Conrad uses these two rivers to represent the different cultures that clash in this novel, which are the â€Å"civilized† and the â€Å"savages†. While exploring these two different worlds Conrad exposes the human nature at its core through the characters in this novel proving that not everything is straightforward and is at it seems. The Thames River located in Southern England represents the advanced European world. In this novel the Europeans regarded themselves as civilized and cultured. On the other hand, Conrad embeds numerous dark intense imageries to describe this â€Å"enlightened† culture such as violent, death, brooding gloom, and more. While the Congo River represents the uncivilized native inhabitants that are described as â€Å"utter savagery† (Conrad, 1990, p. 4), but the nature that surrounds the Congo is described as mysterious, glittering, and precious. The contrast of these locations and representations reveals different aspects of human nature. One un-admirable quality of human nature that is shown is pride. The European characters in this novel had the mentality that they were superior to the natives. Because of their superior status they felt that European Imperialism and the stations set up were meant for â€Å"humanizing, improving, instructing† (Conrad, 1990, p. 29) the uncivilized savages. Instead these civilized European men â€Å"Christianizing† and trying to conform the natives to their standards they have succumb to the darkness within the jungle displaying their true nature. Another aspect of human nature shown by the ironic descriptions of the â€Å"civilized† and â€Å"uncivilized† locations is man’s destructive nature. There were numerous events in this novel that portrayed man’s destructive nature due to ulterior motives. An example that destructive behaviors are apart of human nature is when Kurtz raids countless tribes for ivory for the very purpose of gaining wealth and power. Another example of man’s destructive nature is when numbers of â€Å"pilgrims used to turn out in a body [hippopotamus] and empty every rifle they could lay hands on at him. Some even had sat up o’nights for him. † (Conrad, 1990, p. 25). These men waited for and wasted shots just to kill an old and innocent creature not for survival purposes, but for amusement. Conrad enforces the concept of mans destructive nature in the beginning of the novel when he is describing the â€Å"civilized† world. An example on page one Conrad describes the scenery of this â€Å"superior† civilization as â€Å"The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back still seemed condensed into a mournful gloom, brooding motionless†¦ † Later on in the novel Marlow reads Kurtz pamphlet and is led to believe that Kurtz is not another greedy, self – serving, and power crazed individual like the many characters he has met up with on his journey, but that Kurtz shares the same beliefs that he does. Marlow’s belief that the purpose of European Imperialism in Africa was to improve the culture and to benefit them equally rather than cause chaos for their own personal gain. Marlow’s excitement to meet Kurtz based off his pamphlet and how well everyone speaks of him is an example of how not everything is straightforward. Kurtz wrote his pamphlet in a way that intrigued Marlow and convinced him that they shared the same beliefs, but when Marlow finally met Kurtz he realized that Kurtz is ill physically and mentally. Trickery and inconsistency is embedded within human nature. As much as one would like to believe that humans are consistent and honest, that is not true and apparent in this novel. The main character is not exempt from human tendencies of inconsistency. Earlier on in the novel Marlow states, â€Å"I hate, detest, and can’t bear a lie,† (Conrad, 1990, p. 23). On the other hand at the end of the book he lies to Kurt’s intended to give her sense of peace and saves her from more pain and grief. Though his reasoning is not selfish he still went against his own beliefs and proves inconsistency. Throughout this entire novel Conrad introduces several European characters that portrayed so many non – admirable qualities such as greed, arrogance, envy, vengeance, sloth, and much more. Yet they are considered the â€Å"civilized† ones. Ironically the cannibals and the other natives in this novel show more admirable qualities such as loyalty, hard work, obedient, strong will, and most importantly restraint. While the civilized men were plotting against one another thinking only of themselves the natives displayed much more honorable character. For example, the native tribes that pledged their loyalty to Kurtz were obedient and remained loyal. They would accompany him on expeditions and kill on his command. Another example of honorable qualities portrayed by these â€Å"uncivilized savages† was restraint. The cannibals that assisted Marlow on his journey had been starving for months and never made a move to attack their fellow crew- members. These â€Å"heathens† displayed true character in this situation because â€Å"It takes a man all his inborn strength to fight hunger properly. It’s really easier to face bereavement, dishonor, and the perdition of one’s soul – than this prolonged hunger †¦ no earthly reason for any kind of scruple. Restraint! †¦ the fact facing me – the dazzling fact. † (Conrad, 1990, p. 38). Through the novel â€Å"Heart of Darkness† Conrad portrays and exposes human nature at its best and at its worst. Conrad embeds irony throughout the entire novel to show that not everything is as it seems and that when involving humans there are contradictions. The main point that Conrad is conveying to his reader is that technological advances do not make a culture superior or civilized, but rather the moral code that they live by. There is not one culture superior to the other. Also that each human being is responsible for their own civil or savage behaviors. What makes one civilized is based off of what they do when no one else is around and how they react to any given situation good or terrible. This novel served as a warning from Conrad of man’s true darkness and the â€Å"human secrets that baffle probability†. (Conrad, 1990, p. 37). One is not civilized based on where they grew up, but their reactions to the world they live in. To be civilized is to act with morality, but to be a savage is to embrace the heart of darkness.

The History of Shoes and Footwear

The history of shoes — that is to say, archaeological and paleoanthropological evidence for the earliest use of protective coverings for the human foot — appears to start during the Middle Paleolithic period of approximately 40,000 years ago. The Oldest Shoes The oldest shoes recovered to date are sandals found at several Archaic (~6500-9000 years bp) and a few Paleoindian (~9000-12,000 years bp) sites in the American southwest. Dozens of Archaic period sandals were recovered by Luther Cressman at the Fort Rock site in Oregon, direct-dated ~7500 BP. Fort Rock-style sandals have also been found at sites dated 10,500-9200 cal BP at Cougar Mountain and Catlow Caves. Others include the Chevelon Canyon sandal, direct-dated to 8,300 years ago, and some cordage fragments at the Daisy Cave site in California (8,600 years bp). In Europe, preservation has not been as fortuitous. Within the Upper Paleolithic layers of the cave site of Grotte de Fontanet in France, a footprint apparently shows that the foot had a moccasin-like covering on it. Skeletal remains from the Sunghir Upper Paleolithic sites in Russia (ca 27,500 years bp) appear to have had foot protection. Thats based on the recovery of ivory beads found near the ankle and foot of a burial. A complete shoe was discovered at the Areni-1 Cave in Armenia  and reported in 2010. It was a moccasin-type shoe, lacking a vamp or sole, and it has been dated to ~5500 years BP. Evidence for Shoe Use in Prehistory Earlier evidence for shoe use is based on anatomical changes that may have been created by wearing shoes. Erik Trinkaus has argued that wearing footwear produces physical changes in the toes, and this change is reflected in human feet beginning in the Middle Paleolithic period. Basically, Trinkaus argues that narrow, gracile middle proximal phalanges (toes) compared with fairly robust lower limbs implies localized mechanical insulation from ground reaction forces during heel-off and toe-off. He proposes that footwear was used occasionally by archaic Neanderthal and early modern humans in the Middle Paleolithic, and consistently by early modern humans by the middle Upper Paleolithic. The earliest evidence of this toe morphology noted to date is at the Tianyuan 1 cave site in Fangshan County, China, about 40,000 years ago. Concealed Shoes Historians have noted that shoes seem to have a special significance in some, perhaps many cultures. For example, in 17th and 18th century England, old, worn-out shoes were concealed in the rafters and chimneys of homes. Researchers such as Houlbrook suggest that although the precise nature of the practice is unknown, a concealed shoe may share some properties with other hidden examples of ritual recycling such as secondary burials, or may be a symbol of protection of the home against evil spirits. The time-depth of some particular significance of shoes appears to date from at least the Chalcolithic period: Tell Braks Eye-Temple in Syria included a limestone votive shoe. He mentions George Washington’s second sentence of his address, which was 87 words. On the one hand, I was summoned by my country, whose voice I can never hear but with veneration and love, from a retreat which I had chosen with the fondest predilection, and, in my flattering hopes, with an immutable decision, as the asylum of my declining years–a retreat which was rendered every day more necessary as well as more dear to me by the addition of habit to inclination, and of frequent interruptions in my health to the gradual waste committed on it by time. Back then, the culture was much different, as most people learned to read were through difficult literature such as Pilgrim’s Progress and the King James Bible. Herbert Stein, â€Å"who for 60 years was an economist and connoisseur of American’s political culture,† discovered that the average number of words per sentence for Inaugural Addresses has steadily decreased: â€Å"from Washington through Buchanan the average number of words per sentence was 44; from Lincoln through Wilson, 34; since Wilson, 25. † Will believes that â€Å"the general shortening of sentences reflects, in part, a change in nature of Inaugural Addresses. He refers to Teddy Roosevelt who called the presidency â€Å"a bully pulpit. † Later addresses have had an incentive to tell Americans how to behave with phrases such as â€Å"The only thing we have to fear†¦Ã¢â‚¬  and â€Å"Ask not†¦Ã¢â‚¬  A more popular phrase which was used by Kennedy and Nixon was â€Å"Let us†¦,† which according to Will means, â€Å"For Pete’s sake, pull up your socks and shape up. † The content of the Inaugural Addresses has also changed. George Washington had to be much more modest, speaking about his personal problems and as much as he would like to rest, his country was calling him. In the beginning with Washington, the issue was that he would be able to turn the presidency into another monarchy. Around the time of Cleveland and Garfield, a major issue was polygamy. During the time of Monroe, the issue was coastal fortifications. As of today, these are no longer on the list of major issues. This progression shows how the country has grown over the many years. Though Will is happy that we do not have to talk about the issues of the past anymore, he does not like the shortening of sentences and how Presidents have become more like preachers. He shows appreciation of Washington’s modesty despite the amount of praise he was showered with, but understands how there were different problems during that time. Most of what Will says is backed up with some strong points, using factual information from past people such as Cleveland, Garfield, and Teddy Roosevelt. This greatly backs up his claims, making them hard to argue against. He makes strong arguments that clearly show how there has been quite a change throughout the history of the Inaugural Addresses. A significant point he brings up is the decrease in the word count per sentence over the years. It’s true there has been a major change in literature over the years. Personally, I had some trouble keeping up with the incredibly long sentence made by George Washington. It’s interesting how he partly blames it for the â€Å"change in the nature of Inaugural Addresses. † I’m not sure if I see much connection between the two. Also, though shorter sentences shows our reading mental muscles are weaker than our ancestors’, but this does not seem to have any major negative effect on society, unless Will’s statement about the changing in Inaugural Addresses in coordination with shortening of sentences is true. This leads us to another point about the context of Inaugural Addresses. Looking at the parts of Washington’s address or Lincoln’s address (â€Å"Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this might scourge of war may speedily pass away†¦ With malice toward none, with charity for all†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ), they show hope and love in their speeches. When looking at later ones, they’ve become much more preach-y. For Will, this does not seem to be a good adjustment, and I have to agree with him here. At least in the beginning, it’s never been the President’s job to tell us how to behave. It is true that he is our leader, but his part in leading the country is taking care of political matters such as federal law and diplomatic troubles. Another very interesting matter he brings up is the drastic change in subject matter from speech to speech. With Washington, it was the fear of monarchy. For Monroe, it was coastal fortifications. For Lincoln, it was slavery. For Garfield and Cleveland, it was polygamy. Throughout the years, the severity of the nation’s problems has declined. It’s really something to be proud about. It shows that despite the other reasons Will has pointed out, this country has grown for the better. We’ll always have problems and we’ll keep working to solve them. This gives us drive and displays our strength and motivation. In his article, Will has done a good job of backing up his opinions with strong factual information. While I do not completely agree with him, I’m able to understand and respect his views. Really the only problem I have with the paper is the assumption on how the shortening of sentences â€Å"reflects†¦ a change in the nature of Inaugural Addresses,† because I can’t understand how that exactly works. Yellow Ribbon Project The main aim of this project was to cater to the basic demands of the community by reaching out to them through a series. The road show was targeted towards generating awareness among the masses about the campaign so that they accept the ex-offenders and their families wholeheartedly and motivate them to follow the right track of life. It also inspires action of the communities to rehabilitate and reintegrate the ex-offenders back to their normal course of a disciplined life. On the other hand, it also acted as a platform to raise funds for the Yellow Ribbon fund by selling the hand-made cookies prepared by the members of the Score Bakery, Yellow Ribbon Shoewings and their music CDs. The art work of the inmates was also displayed in the road show. National Addiction Management Service This booth was specifically set up to transmit the messages of social and psychological well-being of the individuals. It had the aim of combating against any sort of addictions be it alcohol, drugs, internet or gambling. An outpatient clinic was also run for three different segments of victims namely the adolescents, subsidized and private patients. They wanted to educate the population about the gruesome effects of any type of addictions. The booth assessed and offered remedies against addiction with the help of the multi disciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, counselors, psychologists. Individual, group as well as family therapy was also provided. It talked about addiction awareness for the community as a whole. An extensive research on addictions was conducted and a separate training for healthcare and social service personnel were included under their service. Singapore EXPO is situated in the eastern part of Singapore and there lies just one Mass Rapid Transit stop or a drive of 15 minutes from the Central Business District and even a drive of only 5 minutes from Changi International Airport. Just adjacent to it is the Changi Business Park renowned for its business hub comprising of upgraded technology firms, knowledge-intensive mechanisms and various continental companies. To top that, easily accessible hotels and a large chain of finger-licking cuisines and beverages and retail outlets are the further icing on the cake. One can avail any of the three-transportation modes to reach the venue without hassle. Since it is located at the crossroads of 3 major expressways i.e. East Coast Parkway, Pan Island Expressway and Tampines Expressway, it makes Singapore EXPO an easy drive of 15 minutes from the CBD and a mere 5 minutes drive from the Changi International Airport ("PlayLAH! Apart from that, there are innumerable cabs available all around Singapore offering reliable services. The fare can range approximately about $ 15 from the airport to the venue of the event and about $ 20 to the city. Moreover, it also has a committed MRT station just next to Hall-6. Trains are very frequent from the airport and Tanah Meran station, which takes almost 25 minutes from the city. Interchange for the new Downtown line provided extra transport modes from the venue to CBD areas like Marina Bay, River Valley and Clarke Quay. The venue for the event was a gracious gift. The entire event was held in a well adorned and co-ordinate ambience. Not only the venue was situated in a great location but it also had a clientele of devoted customers. The rooms itself were split level rooms where the lower level was at the top of the staircase and the beverage and the food section was right there along with the tables set up for displaying the products (Antony et al., 2015). The upper section had tables and chairs where people could sit, relax, and enjoy their delicacy. It also had a stage for the brilliant performances including a well-built symphonic music system. It induced a very laid back and refreshing feel to the visitors. The soft lighting and opulent dcor made it a wonderful spot for the people to pay a visit and spend a fun-filled evening instead of moving around in a crowded location. The event required an ample amount of sponsorship for the fair execution of the entire project since the venue, the foodstuffs and the staffs or volunteers hired were all to be taken care of. Apart from that, the stalls set up for the refreshment of the visitors in terms of comestible and drinks were needed to be sponsored notwithstanding the ones, which were self-sponsored. Half of the costs were meted out through the budget prepared pre-event and the sponsorship group pursued the rest. The collaborative activity of the sponsors and the management proved more than enough to offer a fantastic location, all the required equipments and a confident and amiable staff who added to the pleasure of the evening through their amicable personality and circulation of the event with the lip smacking culinary. Adept selection of sponsors reinforced brand awareness and generated consumer preference for PlayLah and also fostered loyalty about the brand as a whole. Playlah helped their sponsors to integrate the sponsorship into their marketing programs and customer relationship. The event planner clarified what type of naming rights the sponsor received. Appropriate placing of the logo of the sponsor, its trademark and signage offered th em a broad exposure since there was perimeter signage as well as signage appeared inside the venue on various banners and even on clothing. It increased their merchandising power by permitting them to display or demonstrate their sample product. Playlah also enabled profitable promotion of the sponsors through their websites and press releases and made them a part of the scholarship program as a means of promotion. All the participants of the event mingled with the visitors at ease and enjoyed the fruits of their hard work by snacking on the edibles and enjoying the splendid performances. A minor drawback was that since a large number of students were engaged with the event and most of their activities took place before the event, they did not find much to do after the commencement of the event and remained confined to a particular area. This issue could have been fixed if they were allotted the task of active volunteering by means of guiding and encouraging the guests to throw a glance at the items and participate in the various games and workshops thereby adding a component of competition. The group in charge of tickets and posers did a praiseworthy job by designing and printing them. But it is a recommendation that they should have got the posters up a bit early and sell tickets in more convenient locations to increase the sale of tickets. The media personnel acquired a lot of coverage for a gripping storyline to be published in their paper or telecasted in the media. The sponsorship team did more than what was expected from them and brought the total amount to a well-convinced position, which was beyond their specified goal. A compact assortment of the items displayed gave the visitors the chance to choose from a lot many options. Yet some of the items were projected in a way that lent them an over inflated value. The offer of winning the EXPO Robinson vouchers worth $200 was an ingenious tool of marketing which was further beguiling for the guests (Li, 2014).The venue was amazing as reviewed by each one of the guests and the hall looked incredible. It was an arduous team effort, which made the venture a grand success. Every issue was tackled with utmost care and sincerity. The only flaw that needs a pinch of recommendation is that they could have maintained a much more healthy and eco friendly footprint by encouraging the usage of environmentally friendly modes of transport like carbon neutral aircraft (Jones, 2014). Preference for eco- labeled hotel is recommended. Use of plastic materials should have been avoided (Bathelt Zeng, 2015) and they should have brought the local performers and speakers more than they actually did. That is how they could have thought globally and acted locally. Although the venue location, the ambience and the amenities provided were beyond the satisfaction level it could have been a more cost-effective decision. Being a cost conscious organizer, they could have restricted their cost on venue to allow more rooms in the budget for food and entertainment. They could have been flexible with the date and negotiate with the cost. They failed to keep a record of the food and beverage minimums, which should have been kept in notic e. Another issue, which required a serious attention, was the availability of a convenient parking lot, which created a minor clutter when too many cars demanded for a suitable parking spot. There were also certain accessibility issues, which demanded urgent check, since guests with special needs found a little hindrance in accessing the building and its amenities. Last but not the least they should not have depended solely on one particular F.M. station for their major coverage rather invited a higher percentage of audio-visual media for an enhanced coverage and TRP of the event. A bit more srategical approach was required for the utilization of the sponsorship team where certain loopholes maligned the actual taste of the event according to some visitors. Research conducted before selection of the sponsorship team was not upto the mark and the company failed to identify their assets and benefits to some extent. The engagement regarding the sponsorship should have been more focused and the thinking should have been long-term. Decision at short notice resulted in the sponsors acting as mere sponsors and they failed to raise upto the level of able partners during the event as the synchronization was missing in some cases. Yet, after all these lapses this event enabled one to attain a vast level of understanding as to what it needs to conduct an e vent like Play Lah, and we as guests also learnt that time should not be a constraint in accomplishing our desired goals.
